Karma has raised over 10,000 GBP to place three of India’s future business and community elite in full university scholarships as part of Karma’s annual Penguin Walk, held recently at Karma’s renowned Le Preverger estate in the French Riviera.
Now in its third year, the event drew a dedicated group of philanthropists for a day of fun, food, and leisurely exercise, which helped to raise funds for Christel House – an international non-profit organisation that transforms the lives of impoverished children around the world.
In true Karma fashion the ‘penguins,’ as participants are known, came ready to walk the almost 30-kilometre trek dressed as the nominated animal for the year. The previous year’s nominee selected “penguins dressed as hamsters” as the 2017 theme, and while most got the memo one member threw caution to the wind and came dressed as the Cookie Monster of Sesame St fame.
Starting at Le Preverger, the intrepid penguins ‘waddled’ through the hills to catch the sunrise, before a leisurely breakfast. A boat to St. Tropez delivered them to lunch and a chance to rest their weary flippers, where the thirsty penguins ensured hydration was top order. The point, according to Spence, is that it’s possible for businesses and their customers to have fun while contributing to the communities in which they operate.
Giving back to communities
Karma and Spence’s involvement in India stretches back to the very inception of Karma when the then-named Royal Group opened its first property during the early 90’s in the southern state of Goa. For Spence, giving back to the communities that have played a part in Karma’s global success makes good business sense as much as it makes karmic sense.
“We’ve supported Christel House in a big way since the early days, helping to build a library for the children to use in their studies, as well as supplying all the food: that’s around 900 kids every day of the year. We also hold an annual camp for the kids at one of our Indian resorts.”
“The Penguin Walk is a more direct and fun way for our members and guests to get involved in unique and fulfilling experiences, which is something we’re very much focused on and part of what Karma is about as a brand.”
“When you meet the kids, I mean, some of them really are geniuses. We far exceeded our fundraising expectations this year, and with the money raised, we have enough to put three students through full scholarships. We’re directly contributing to the future business and community leaders of tomorrow, and we really can’t ask for more than that.”
