Rottnest Island – Mediterranian Vibes, World Class Surfing, Iconic Marsupials & A Storied History

With its Mediterranean style climate, cerulean waters and richly fertile coastal strip, Rottnest Island is one of the most habitable regions in Australia. One of the State’s true jewels is found offshore, however, on an island that was once a place of exile.

Rottnest Island is just a brief ferry ride from state capital Perth, but it feels like a world away. And it has a fascinating history that far predates that of the provincial capital. Aboriginal artefacts there are hard to accurately date, but could reach back as far as an astonishing 30,000 years.

Today, Rottnest Island is one of the premier holiday destinations in the region, with as many as 63 bays and beaches waiting for you to discover, each beautiful in their own way and each lapped by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

Karma Rottnest is the perfect place to experience all that this perfectly put together little island has to offer. The property, once a colonial barracks, has been transformed into a serene luxury retreat, set in lush gardens complete with pool.

Karma Rottnest offers a range of accommodations, from suites to hotel style apartments – there are rooms to suit a range of requirements whether you’re after a romantic break for two or traveling with a group of family or friends.

Riva Restaurant, serves up delicious wood-fired pizzas and a Mediterranean-inspired menu perfectly suited to the climate. Meanwhile the Governor’s Sports Bar welcomes guests with a more casual atmosphere for relaxed gatherings, while Karma Spa rounds things off with indulgent wellness offering including unique therapies delivered by Karma’s highly trained bodyworkers.

The island itself offers a wealth of activities to occupy the sun-soaked days. Diving and snorkeling are popular pastimes, with both reefs and wrecks to explore. Other popular activities include cycling, tennis, golf and stand up paddling. Surfers meanwhile can discover some of Australia’s top 50 breaks right here. Culture vultures can explore the historic tunnels and defence posts of World War II, while nature lovers can enjoy guided tours which will certainly take in the quokka, the endemic marsupial, that’s become something of an icon, with a host of celebs posing for selfies with them.

If you fancy a last minute break, why not head over this weekend and check out the Rottnest Channel Swim – a 19.7km swim across open ocean that’s become one of the biggest sporting events in Western Australia – and one that Karma Group has supported over the years.
