Welcome to the Autumn/Spring edition of the Karma Chronicles

Tiger Tiger Burning Bright

There are only approximately 4000 tigers left on earth and 50% call India their home. I am extremely excited, therefore, to give my readers an advance bit of information, and announce that our newest Karma Group resort is located next to one of the most famous and well-populated tiger forests in Northern India!!

Not only do tigers call it home but a myriad of other species can be seen and experienced… and all with the majestic Himalyas providing the backdrop. You can find out more about the resort in our destination feature below.

Tigers have always featured heavily in children’s stories and that brings me neatly to my main theme this month: the commitment of Karma to children’s charities. As you may know we have had a longstanding relationship with Christel house, the school in Bangalore and our involvement is something I am extremely proud of.

We recently hosted our annual Camp Royal, when we give over our resorts in Goa to the children so they can enjoy a fabulous holiday. They sent me and the Karma management team a moving and heart-warming thank you DVD. It’s at times like this that you feel so proud and so happy that you can help.

I also set off in a few weeks on our annual Penguin Walk, when a group of people dress as penguins and walk 38 kms from our French property, Le Preverger, to Club 55 for a savage lunch, whilst collecting as much money as possible for the kids in Bangalore.

The funds from this walk are used for a specific purpose – to provide full academic and living scholarships to allow some of the kids to continue their education after school and complete a university degree.

We now have 18 of these students at major universities, and it is amazing to think that dressing as a penguin and walking to a bottle of wine at lunch can enable an ex slum kid to qualify as a doctor, engineer or lawyer!! Now that really is a win-win!!!!

I want to thank everyone reading this as well for all the help directly or indirectly they have given to over 900 kids at Christel House. We really all are making a difference.

So I had better log off and get back to my training (whether that is training to walk … or training to drink the wine at the end of the walk…well…I will leave that for you to decide!!!)

Browse Eye-opening Rock Chronicles Over Cocktails at Karma Sanctum Soho

Why do the lives of Rock n Roll legends fascinate us so much? It isn’t just the limelight that shines on them – it’s the lifestyle, the excesses, the rebel spirit, the tours, festivals and concerts and of course these three minute musical masterpieces they dream up that set the world alight.

Karma Sanctum Soho is our nod to Cool Britannia and to Rock n Roll hedonism in general. Now the heart of the hotel is home to a unique library chronicling the lives and labours of some of rock’s most recognisable figures. The Rock Library is located in Karma Sanctum Soho’s Wild Heart Bar & Grill and brings together a selection of beautiful limited edition, large format books created by Genesis Publications, the world’s leading publishers of signed, hand bound, limited editions. Specialising in rock & roll photography books, for over 40-years. Genesis has worked with many iconic and inspirational figures in the industry to create highly individual and personal books that reflect a lifetime of creativity.

This isn’t the kind of library reserved for silence either – the adjacent Marble Bar, sponsored by Absolut Elyx Vodka, serves up signature cocktails that’ll help bring all those rock n roll anecdotes a little more vividly to life for you…and we highly recommend the vodka cocktails of course!

Head down soon and you can take a look at a very special guitar that’s on display behind the bar. The one of a kind Jackson X Series Signature Adrian Smith SDX guitar has been hand-painted by artist, fashion designer and musician Chloe Trujillo whose husband Robert Trujillo is of course a member of one of the greatest rock bands ever – Metallica. The guitar has been signed by some of the biggest legends in rock from the last 50 years – Roger Daltry, Roger Taylor, Billy Gibbons, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo, Scott Gorham, Richie Kotzen and the namesake himself, Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden.

The guitar is being auctioned to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust and will soon be claimed by one lucky individual – so grab your chance to see it in pride of place at Marble Bar amongst the hotel’s other rock n roll memorabilia.

Karma Music Luminary Hans Havenaar Turns Dj Sets Into Genre-hopping Odysseys

Hans Havenaar loves music. And when you’ve dedicated more than half a century to sharing the music you love with the people, we think you can legitimately describe yourself as a ‘groovemaster’ – the term that Hans prefers over the more common disc jockey.

Originally from the Netherlands, Hans – or “The Dutch Touch” as he is sometimes affectionately called by his many fans – has a genuinely eclectic approach when it comes to crafting his sets. Spending much of his time on the magical islands of Mykonos and Bali, Hans is expert at responding to his audience with just the right sequence of tracks – which will likely span multiple decades and music genres.

Hans first memory of hearing music was via his dad’s collection – which he says was pretty run of the mill accordion music popular in the Netherlands at the time. “But there was this one
Jazz record that my crazy uncle gave to my dad, who never played it. I remember, it was Coleman Hawkins, a pretty wild Be-Bop track. And it was this unusual record that got me started”

Hans has retained a love of Jazz in its many different incarnations ever since – but more broadly, his passion for music is driven by an endless curiosity to discover new artists and styles, whether that means something obscure from the past that’s been forgotten, or a new musical genius that’s just starting to make their presence felt.

For Hans, a music set is a true journey into sound and all the things it can make you feel. It’s this approach that he brings to his appearances at Karma: there’s nothing quite like hearing him spinning live at Karma Beach, white sand lapped by the Indian Ocean awash with sunset colours, with a signature Karma cocktail in hand. But don’t worry if you can’t make it to Karma Beach right now – you can evoke those tropical sundowner vibes by simply tuning in to Hans’ online radio station, All Day Jazz, powered by Karma Group, for an eclectic blend of all that’s good in music…

Tigers & Temples in India’s Heartlands – Discover Karma Sitabani

They call Uttarakhand ‘Devabhumi’ – the Land of the Gods. It’s a name that reflects the countless temples and places of worship scattered throughout this Northern Indian state – but it could just as well refer to the stunning landscapes and the richness of flora and fauna that are found here. From forest to grassland to Himalayan peaks, Uttarakhand offers a kaleidoscope of experiences for the visitor. And at its heart can be found the Jim Corbett National Park – the location for Karma’s newest India resort – Karma Sitabani.

Karma Sitabani is named after a nearby temple dedicated to the Goddess Sita – Ram’s consort who is associated with good fortune, prosperity and happiness. And for a guaranteed dose of happiness, all you need do is join a safari into what is India’s oldest national park and one of the very best places in the world to witness the majestic Bengal tiger in its native habitat. Karma Sitabani is located right on the edge of the Park, making it the perfect gateway to a wealth of nature-based experiences.

Established in the 1930s and named after a famous naturalist and hunter, the Jim Corbett National Park comprises 520km of stunning forest and grassland that is home to 488 plant varieties as well as 586 bird species. That’s besides the many iconic mammals that live here – besides the tiger, there are elephants, buffalo, leopards, jungle cats, Himalayan black bears, deer, sloths, mongooses and jackals.

There are many different ways to experience the Park and its surroundings – besides organised safaris, there are also zip lines, river rafting, temple and waterfall tours. The nearby lakeside towns of Nainital and Bhimtal are both worth visiting for their pretty colourful architecture, mountainous Himalayan landscapes and of course the lakes themselves.

Karma Sitabani itself is a collection of beautifully appointed deluxe rooms with private lawns, family suites with private balconies and wooden cottages with both lawns and balconies. Each accommodation features flat screen TV, WiFi, mini bar and tea/coffee maker.

India is of course where Karma was born and we are so excited to bring our members and guests a whole new destination experience within the subcontinent. To be among the first to experience Karma Sitabani, please contact one of our Karma Concierges…

Paying It Forward With Karma Group Ambassador Programme

We generally talk about our staff, members and friends as the global Karma family. After all, apart from the world class destinations, the entertainment and unique experiences – it’s really a sense of community that makes the whole thing tick. That’s why we love it when members introduce the Karma experience to new people by word of mouth. And it’s why we’ve made our referral programme a bit different.

As long time members will know, philanthropy is one of Karma’s pillars. Wherever we are in the world, we make it a priority to engage with local communities and to support those less fortunate than ourselves, in particular helping young people to have the opportunities to fulfil their potential in life. Now, through the Karma Ambassador programme, you can choose to support us.

Here’s how it works – every time you give us a referral, we’ll donate US$1 to charity. If that referral confirms and stays with us, you’ll have the option of either donating US$100 to a charity of your choice, or to have this money in credit towards your next experience at a Karma Group venue. And if your referral chooses to become a member, then we’ll donate US$250 to a charity of your choice, or assign it as credit to your next Karma Experience. The choice is yours!

To find out more about our referral programme, or to make an introduction, please reach out to a Karma Concierge.
